Gareth Willis, PhD is an Instructor of Pediatrics in the Division of Newborn Medicine, Children’s Hospital Boston, Harvard Medical School. His research investigates the molecular and subcellular basis of lung inflammation and the ability of MSC-exosomes to modulate specific inflammatory pathways controlling lung injury and tissue remodeling in the developing lung. The overarching aim of Dr. Willis’ research is to assess the efficacy of purified ‘bioactive’ mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) derived-exosomes in preclinical models of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and pulmonary hypertension, and to decipher the mechanism(s)-of-action that underlie their therapeutic action. Dr. Willis is an expert in stem cell-based therapies in developmental and vascular diseases of the lung. His research is currently funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH), American Thoracic Society, and the Little Giraffe Foundation. He is on the editorial board of specialist extracellular vesicle journals and has received numerous scientific awards/prizes for his research discoveries, including, ‘Young Endocrinologist’ (National Society for Endocrinology) and the American Thoracic Society Scholarship by the Assembly of Pediatrics. As part of the Kourembanas Laboratory (Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School), Dr. Willis has developed extensive experience in stem cell biology, lung development, extracellular vesicles, and nanotechnology. Dr. Willis’ passion is to drive the development of new novel therapeutics, to help meet unmet patient needs and improve the lives of patients.
